An easy, single-ingredient maths activity that introduces early numeracy skills using natural elements found right in your garden.

• What you need: A variety of freshly picked flowers (daisies, sunflowers, or hibiscus work best).
• What to do: To start, guide your child to observe the structure of a flower and explain what petals are. Once they understand, begin counting the number of petals on each flower together.

To make this activity more comprehensive, encourage your child to identify and sort the flowers based on the colours of their petals. • What you need: A clear, sealable ziplock bag, a cup of uncooked rice grains, a marker, and a few small paper chits.
• What to do: First, write a shortlist of simple age-appropriate sight words on the small paper chits. Place these chits inside the ziplock bag and fill it up with the rice grains. Seal the bag securely, shake it thoroughly to hide the chits, and hand it to your child along with a master checklist of those exact sight words.

Your child’s task is to gently manipulate, squeeze, and scour through the sensory bag to find the hidden chits, matching them one by one with the master list. This immersive game significantly boosts vocabulary, focus, and early reading skills.

4. Literacy & Numeracy Refresher: Fun with Bubble Wrap

Who doesn’t love popping bubble wrap? This high-tactile activity lets you use leftover packaging material in an educational manner to refresh your child’s basic alphabet and number recognition skills.

• What you need: A sheet of unused bubble wrap and a few colourful permanent markers.
• What to do: Take the bubble wrap sheet and write letters or numbers at random directly on top of the individual bubbles (ensure you do not repeat the exact same sequence too close together).

Once prepared, sit comfortably with your child and call out a specific letter or number. Your child’s task is to visually scan the sheet, locate the correct bubble, and pop it enthusiastically. This game heavily reinforces hand-eye coordination alongside cognitive recall.

5. Cognitive Discovery: The DIY Sensory Box
